Local Business Steps Out of the Office to Support Local Community Organisations in the Build up to ‘You Make the Difference’ Volunteers’ Week 2017

Local Business Steps Out of the Office to Support Local Community Organisations in the Build up to ‘You Make the Difference’ Volunteers’ Week 2017

In the build up to National Volunteer’s Week, Thrive Trafford has helped to organise several Community Volunteering days to showcase one of the many ways in which local businesses can also make a difference in their local community for just a short period of time, through Employer Supported volunteering days.

Last week employees from Thermo Fisher Scientific stepped out of their office to spend the day volunteering at two local community organisations as part of their global Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy. Coppice Community Wellbeing Library was one of the organisations to benefit from one of the team of helpers. Helping with activities such as weeding, planting, jet washing pathways and other gardening activities around the community library. Delamere School, a School for children with complex needs, based in Flixton was the other organisation that got hands on support to help refurbish a very small memory garden that they have to remember children who were pupils at the School who have sadly passed away.

Alison Poole, Senior Project Manager from Thermo Fisher Scientific who approached Thrive for support with brokering the Community Volunteer Days said:
“Thank you so much for linking us up with Delamere School and Coppice library. Both days were successful given it was our first company volunteer day in a long time! We looked for volunteer projects to support our global CSR strategy. Thermo Fisher Scientific is keen to give back to the local community, and so the volunteer projects we chose fit closely to our mission to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.
The people that took part were challenged by tasks different to their day jobs, they worked as a team and had great fun, particularly with the power washer! It was very rewarding to do something for the local community and we aim to continue our relationship with both organisations. Thank you to Thrive Trafford for supporting us to give back.”

National Volunteers’ Week takes place during 1st to 7th June 2017 and will recognise the contribution volunteers make to our communities every day.
This year the theme of the campaign is “You Make the Difference”, highlighting the impact volunteers make in our communities every day.
We hope you and your organisation will join in and help to make this Volunteers’ Week one of the best yet!

Volunteers are central to the work of charities and other organisations across the Trafford Borough, and are an invaluable resource and support for our local communities.

Everyone involved in volunteering can take part. National Volunteers’ Week is for all kinds of groups and organisations – large or small, public and private, voluntary and community. If your organisation in Trafford involves volunteers, join in the celebrations; recognise, celebrate and showcase your volunteers and challenge non-volunteers to get involved! How you decide to celebrate is up to you and your volunteers.

Throughout the week Thrive will been promoting through social media and the Thrive website the different ways in which people in Trafford volunteer, the ways in which people can get involved in volunteering, and some of volunteering opportunities available to people across Trafford. Volunteering Opportunities range from taking part in one-off sporting events to on-going long-term volunteer support for service’s such as ‘Friendly Faces’ hospital discharge support for older people.

Thrive has seen an increasing demand from people across Trafford wanting to start volunteering, and National Volunteer’s Week is an ideal time for voluntary organisations to showcase and celebrate the work volunteers do to highlight the benefits to people interested in volunteering.
