Summary of the Role
A school street is a road outside a school with restrictions on motor traffic at school drop off and pick up times. The aim is to reduce air pollution and road danger and to encourage families to walk, scoot or cycle to school, leading to better mental and physical health and a more environmentally friendly school run. Volunteers are needed to oversee a school street in their neighbourhood.

Main Tasks
Volunteers work together to place barriers in the road at the closure times. They walk exempt vehicles (eg residents’ cars and Blue Badge holders) safely through the School Street. They are also a friendly presence for children and families coming to school. Volunteers can commit to a regular morning or afternoon session (each session is half an hour or 45 minutes depending on the school) or just sign up here and there when they have some free time. It’s a great way to mix with others and make friends in the local community.
Volunteering on a school street can be a really rewarding experience – volunteers often say that as well as helping to keep children safe, they enjoy mixing with people in the community who they wouldn’t otherwise meet.
Volunteers can commit to a regular morning or afternoon slot, or volunteer now and then when they have time. Currently the project involves:
– Seymour Park Primary School, Northumberland Road, Old Trafford
– St Hugh of Lincoln RC Primary School, Stretford
– Victoria Park Infants School, Henshaw St / Howard St, Stretford
– Tyntesfield, Alma Road, Sale
– Urmston (several streets connecting numerous schools)
