Greater Manchester Nature for Health Addressing health inequality in Greater Manchester – A New Green Social Prescribing Programme Now Launched

Greater Manchester Nature for Health Addressing health inequality in Greater Manchester

A new Green Social Prescribing programme has been launched across Greater Manchester to make sure that more people can enjoy parks and nature to support good mental health and wellbeing. We are calling this work Greater Manchester Nature for Health.

This is an exciting development, there is more awareness than ever before of the health benefits of being outdoors, and commitment to ensuring this is a benefit for everyone. An important part of this work is to make sure that everyone who wants to be involved in Green Social Prescribing can be, and has access to the most useful information, training, and resources. We are creating a stakeholder led network for Greater Manchester to share these resources, provide updates and build capacity around Green Social Prescribing. Anyone interested in learning more about and being involved in the programme is encouraged to join this group.

Join the Nature for Health network

We’d love for as many people to be a part of this great programme as possible, to help shape the work and spread the word. To join the network, please register your details through the following survey. To help us understand the type of training and resources that might be useful, the survey also asks questions about what is already happening and what you may find helpful in the future, by answering these questions we can create something useful for everyone in Greater Manchester. We want as many people to be a part of this as possible, so please also forward this message on to your networks. The survey will close on Sunday 5 September 2021.

More information about GM Nature for Health

Greater Manchester was selected as one of seven government ‘Green Social Prescribing Test and Learn’ sites and awarded £500,000 to fund two-year pilot nature-based pilot projects. The national Green Social Prescribing Programme will look at how to tackle and prevent mental ill-health, by offering connection to the natural environment through referral to green and/or blue social prescribing services. A key focus of this work is to reduce health inequalities and make sure communities can access nature in a way that suits them.

In Greater Manchester, the Nature for Health programme is being overseen by the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership. Pilot projects are being run across Greater Manchester, led by Petrus, Sow the City, Salford CVS, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and City of Trees, along with many other partners in the environmental, mental health and voluntary sectors.
